About the Event

The event which is held at Guwahati in the month of March every year attracts literary lovers of the region. Each of the two awards carries a cash prize of Rs 51,000, a citation, a memento and a specially designed Muga scarf. While Padmanath Vidyabinod Memorial award is presented for contribution to Assamese literature, Ramnath Biswas Memorial award is presented in recognition for contribution to Bengali literature. Every year two eminent personalities from Bengali and Assamese literary world are specially invited to deliver lectures on a range of subjects pertaining to Bangla and Assamese literature/ culture/art under Ramnath Biswas Memorial lecture and Padmanath Vidyabinod Memorial lecture respectively.

About Ramnath Biswas

Ramnath Biswas was actively associated with the Indian freedom struggle as a member of the famous Anushilan Samiti and actively participated in the India’s freedom struggle. Later, he travelled to four continents on a bicycle, which earned him the title of ‘Bhuparjatak’ or the Globe Trotter. Depicting his vast experience Ramnath wrote 30 travelogues which includes ‘Tarun Turki’, ‘Lal Chin’, ‘Maranbijoyi Chin’, ‘Jujutshu Japan’, ‘Iraner Arjo’ among others. It is through his writings from which we came to know about Kamal Pasha created new Turkey and the vibrancy of China.

About Padmanath Bhattacharya Vidyabinod

Both Padmanath Bhattacharya Vidyabinod and RamnathBiswas were born in Baniachung under Habiganj sub division in the Sylhet district of undivided Assam. Padmanath had a bright educational career and spent a major portion of his active life as a professor in Cotton College, Guwahati. He was actively associated with literature and historical research of Assam with his pioneering research work titled ‘Kamarupashasanavali’. Vidyabinod was also instrumental in the establishment of the Assam Research Society and was also one of the founder-members of the Asam Sahitya Sabha.

অনুষ্ঠান সম্পর্কে

পুরস্কার প্রদানের যে-অনুষ্ঠানটি প্রতিবছর মার্চ মাসে গুয়াহাটিতে আয়োজিত হয় তা ওই অঞ্চলের সাহিত্যপ্রেমীদের এক বিশেষ আকর্ষণের কেন্দ্রবিন্দু। দুটি পুরস্কারের প্রতিটিরই অর্থমূল্য ৫১,০০০ টাকা, সেইসঙ্গে রয়েছে একটি করে মানপত্র, সম্মানস্মারক এবং বিশেষভাবে প্রস্তুত মুগার উত্তরীয়। পদ্মনাথ বিদ্যাবিনোদের নামাঙ্কিত পুরস্কারটি দেওয়া হয় অসমিয়া সাহিত্যে অবদানের জন্য আর রামনাথ বিশ্বাসের নামাঙ্কিত পুরস্কার দেওয়া হয় বাংলা সাহিত্যে অবদানের জন্য। এ-ছাড়া, বাংলা ও অসমিয়া সাহিত্য-সংস্কৃতি-শিল্প সম্বন্ধে রামনাথ বিশ্বাস স্মারক বক্তৃতা আর পদ্মনাথ বিদ্যাবিনোদ স্মারক বক্তৃতা প্রদানের জন্য যথাক্রমে বাংলা ও অসমিয়া সাহিত্য ক্ষেত্রের দুজন বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তিকে আমন্ত্রণ করা হয়। এই উপলক্ষ্যে প্রকাশিত হয় উক্ত দুটি বক্তৃতা এবং ফাউন্ডেশন ও অনুষ্ঠান সম্পর্কিত অন্যান্য তথ্য সংবলিত একটি স্মারকগ্রন্থও।

রামনাথ বিশ্বাস সম্পর্কে

বিখ্যাত অনুশীলন সমিতির সদস্য হিসেবে রামনাথ বিশ্বাস ভারতের স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে সক্রিয়ভাবে যুক্ত ছিলেন। পরে তিনি সাইকেলে চারটি মহাদেশ ভ্রমণ করেন, যা তাঁর ‘ভূপর্যটক’ উপাধি লাভের কারণ। বিপুল অভিজ্ঞতার বিস্তারিত বর্ণনা দিয়ে ৩০টিরও বেশি ভ্রমণকাহিনি লেখেন রামনাথ, যার মধ্যে ‘তরুণ তু্র্কী’, লাল চীন’, ‘মরণবিজয়ী চীন’, ‘জুজুৎসু জাপান’, ইরানের আর্য’ প্রভৃতি বিশেষ খ্যাতি অর্জন করেছে। তাঁর রচনাবলি থেকেই আমরা কামাল পাশা সৃষ্ট নতুন তুরস্ক এবং চিনের কর্মোদ্যোগ সম্পর্কে জানতে পারি।

পণ্ডিত পদ্মনাথ ভট্টাচার্য বিদ্যাবিনোদ সম্পর্কে

পদ্মনাথ ভট্টাচার্য বিদ্যাবিনোদ এবং রামনাথ বিশ্বাস উভয়েই অবিভক্ত অসমে শ্রীহট্ট জেলার হবিগঞ্জ মহকুমার অধীন বানিয়াচঙে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। শিক্ষাজগতের উজ্জ্বল রত্ন পদ্মনাথ তাঁর সক্রিয় জীবনের অধিকাংশ অতিবাহিত করেন গুয়াহাটির কটন কলেজে প্রোফেসর হিসেবে। তিনি সাহিত্য আর অসমের ঐতিহাসিক গবেষণার সঙ্গে গভীরভাবে যুক্ত ছিলেন। তাঁর ‘কামরূপশাসনাবলী’ শীর্ষক গ্রন্থটি অসমের ঐতিহাসিক গবেষণার ক্ষেত্রে পথিকৃৎ হিসেবে চিহ্নিত। আসাম রিসার্চ সোসাইটি স্থাপনের ক্ষেত্রে বিদ্যাবিনোদ যেমন নেতৃস্থানীয় ভূমিকা পালন করেছেন তেমনই ছিলেন অসম সাহিত্য সভার একজন প্রতিষ্ঠাতা-সদস্য।
